I was born in 1941, and after studying at Cambridge University, I became a professional mathematician and university teacher in 1963. A brief curriculum vitae is available.
From 1988 to 2006 I was Professor of Mathematics at the London School of Economics, where I was also Director of CDAM, the Centre for Discrete and Applicable Mathematics. I have written 12 books and over 100 papers on mathematical topics, many of them in algebraic combinatorics and its applications. I became Emeritus Professor in 2006 and continue to teach MA410 Information, Communication and Cryptography for the MSc in Applicable Mathematics, and MA318 History of Mathemtics in Finance and Economics for undergraduates.
I am a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics.
I am a former General Secretary and a member of the Council of the London Mathematical Society.
My hobby is writing about the history of weights and scales. I am currently Chair of the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors (Europe), and a member of the British Numismatic Society.
